About this experience

If the Mara is the lion trip, Amboseli is the elephant trip. The park is small, flat, and dominated by Kilimanjaro on the southern horizon. The elephant herds here are some of the largest in Africa — and one of the few places where you can reliably photograph a hundred elephants with snow-capped Kili behind them.

Signature experiences

Optional add-ons our specialists can build into this trip. Prices are per person, confirmed on request.

Maasai village visit from$20

Spend an hour in a working manyatta — the jumping dance, fire-making, and a look at daily Maasai life, hosted by the community itself.

Sundowner drinks from$35

Chilled drinks on a ridge as the sun drops and the sky turns — a quiet, golden end to a day of game drives.

Guided bush walk from$45

On foot with an armed ranger — tracks, plants, birds and the small details a vehicle drives straight past.

Private bush dinner from$60

A lantern-lit table set out under the stars, your own chef and a crackling fire — the safari dinner people remember for years.

The plan, day by day

From pickup to drop-off — exactly what your trip looks like.

Printable itinerary →
Day 1
Day 1 Nairobi → Amboseli

4-hour drive south from Nairobi (we serve a proper packed lunch — not the petrol-station kind). Arrive Amboseli Sopa Lodge by mid-afternoon. Game drive at 4pm — first elephants in the first hour, usually.

Day 2
Day 2 Kili at dawn, then the marshes

Up at 5:30am for sunrise over Kilimanjaro — Kili is shy and often hides behind cloud by mid-morning, so dawn is the moment. Morning drive through Enkongo Narok swamp, where the big elephant herds gather to drink. Afternoon at leisure, optional Maasai community visit.

Day 3
Day 3 Observation Hill, fly-camp dinner

Climb Observation Hill at first light — only spot in the park you're allowed out of the vehicle, 360° over the marshes. Afternoon game drive. Dinner is at a fly-camp set up in the bush — five tables, lanterns, fire, the Milky Way.

Day 4
Day 4 Final drive, return to Nairobi

Sunrise drive, brunch at camp, road transfer back to Nairobi. Arrive by mid-afternoon.

Common questions

Will I see Mount Kilimanjaro?+

Reliably between January and March, before mid-morning haze. June to October Kili shows up about 60% of mornings. We plan dawn drives accordingly — any guide who tells you 7am is fine doesn't understand Kilimanjaro.

How is Amboseli different from the Mara?+

Amboseli is flat, open, and dominated by Kili. The wildlife concentrates around the marshes; you'll see elephants in huge family groups. You will see less variety than in the Mara — but the photographs are different. Many travellers do both.

Is the road from Nairobi rough?+

Mostly paved with a 30-minute dirt section at the end. We use a private 4x4 — about 4 hours each way. Not unpleasant. The alternative flight from Wilson costs $450 pp and saves you maybe two hours total.

Are there lion in Amboseli?+

A small resident pride, yes. Cheetah occasionally, leopard rarely. The wildlife reputation is elephants and herds — not the big-cat density of the Mara.
