Why the coast — and why Diani specifically
There are several coastal options in Kenya — Lamu in the far north, Watamu in the middle, Diani in the south. We default to Diani for post-safari beach time for three reasons:
- The flight from the Mara lands at Ukunda airstrip, 15 minutes from Diani beach. No second connection through Nairobi.
- The beach itself — 20km of unbroken powder-white sand, protected by an offshore reef that takes the swell out. The water is bath-warm year-round (27–30°C) and almost always calm enough to wade out 200m and still touch bottom.
- The infrastructure. Restaurants, dive shops, supermarkets, a reasonable hospital, a long-running dhow charter scene. You can do nothing for a week or build whole days of activity. Lamu is more beautiful in a postcard sense but harder to get to and thinner on amenities.
What the days look like
The honest answer is that the best Diani days look like nothing in particular. You wake, swim, eat, read, swim again, lunch, nap, walk the beach, watch the sun go down behind palm trees on the western horizon, eat dinner, sleep. After five days of safari this is exactly right.
For the days you want to do something, the options:
- Kisite-Mpunguti marine park — the reef trip, 45 min by boat from Shimoni jetty. Brilliant coral, sometimes dolphins, occasionally whale sharks (Nov–Feb).
- Wasini Island lunch — pair with the marine park; lunch is a long-cooked seafood platter in the village.
- Dhow sail at sunset out of Galu Beach. 1.5 hours, gentle.
- Kayaking the Kongo River estuary through mangroves.
- Kite-surfing at Galu — best winds Dec–Feb and Jun–Sep.
- Skydiving over the beach (yes, really — and yes, with safety records we’ve checked).
Getting there
From the Mara: fly Wilson → Ukunda direct (no Nairobi stop on most schedules). 1h 50min in a light aircraft. Cost: ~$340 pp.
From Nairobi: fly JKIA → Ukunda (1h on Jambojet or Kenya Airways, ~$130 pp return) or fly JKIA → Mombasa then drive (1h 15min, cheaper, more flexibility).
Driving from Nairobi is theoretically possible (8 hours on the Mombasa road) but unrewarding.
Trips that include Diani
Our flagship 7-night Mara + Diani combination is the cleanest way to include it. We can also build a coast-only trip if you’ve already done a Kenyan safari or you’re after a quiet honeymoon week.
Best time to visit Diani Coast
- December – March Peak
Hot, dry, gin-clear water. Christmas and New Year are the most expensive weeks of the year — book six months ahead.
- April – May Avoid
Long rains. The coast is more livable than the Mara during these months, but afternoons are wet and the sea can be silty.
- June – October Excellent
Dry season, slightly cooler (still 27–29°C), great water visibility. Pairs perfectly with a Mara migration trip.
- November Shoulder
Short rains. Cheaper, occasional showers. Many travellers actually prefer this — the beach is empty.
