Meru National Park — Four days in Born Free country — the lush, river-laced wilderness of Meru, where Elsa the lioness was raised and returned to the wild
4 days · 3 nights · Best Jun – Oct & Dec – Mar
About this experience
Meru is the Kenya of Joy Adamson's Born Free — wild, green and gloriously empty. Fed by fourteen rivers running down from Mount Kenya, it's a lush tangle of doum palms, riverine forest and open savannah that feels a world away from the busy parks. It has the full cast — elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, reticulated giraffe, and the Grevy's zebra of the north — plus a well-guarded rhino sanctuary for both black and white rhino. What it doesn't have is crowds: you can spend a whole game drive without passing another car. For travellers who've done the Mara and want somewhere genuinely off the map, Meru is the one.

Price breakdown
The plan, day by day
From pickup to drop-off — exactly what your trip looks like.
Morning drive north-east, skirting the Mount Kenya foothills, arriving at Meru for a late lunch. Afternoon game drive along the rivers and doum-palm groves — elephant at the water, reticulated giraffe, and the open plains game. Dinner and overnight at a riverside lodge or tented camp.
A full day exploring the park. Morning game drive to the rhino sanctuary — one of Kenya's best-protected populations of both black and white rhino. The rivers draw everything here: elephant herds, buffalo, waterbuck, and lion resting in the shade. A picnic lunch by the water, then an afternoon drive as the light softens. Overnight at camp.
Deeper into the park today, toward the country made famous by Joy and George Adamson and Elsa the lioness. Big-cat tracking, birdlife along the Tana tributaries, and the sheer emptiness that makes Meru special. Optional visit to Elsa's grave. Dinner and overnight at camp.
A final morning game drive, breakfast, then the drive back to Nairobi — or on to Ol Pejeta, Samburu or Mount Kenya if you're extending. We arrange the onward connection.

Common questions
Why choose Meru over the Mara?+
The Mara is unbeatable for sheer density of big cats and the migration — but it's busy. Meru is the opposite: fewer animals per square kilometre, but you'll often have a sighting entirely to yourself. It suits people who've done a classic safari and want somewhere wild, green and genuinely uncrowded, with strong elephant, lion and rhino.
Is the Born Free connection real?+
Yes — Meru is where George and Joy Adamson raised and released Elsa the lioness in the 1950s, the story behind the book and film Born Free. Elsa's grave is in the park, and you can visit it. The park still carries that legacy of returning wildlife to the wild.
Can I combine Meru with other parks?+
It pairs naturally with Ol Pejeta, Samburu or Mount Kenya, all a manageable drive away — a great north-of-Nairobi circuit. Tell us your days and we'll route it.
