Meru National Park
Meru is the Kenya of Joy Adamson's Born Free — wild, green and gloriously empty. Fed by fourteen rivers running down from Mount Kenya, it's a lush tangle of doum palms, riverine forest and open savannah that feels a world away from the busy parks. It has the full cast — elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, reticulated giraffe, and the Grevy's zebra of the north — plus a well-guarded rhino sanctuary for both black and white rhino. What it doesn't have is crowds: you can spend a whole game drive without passing another car. For travellers who've done the Mara and want somewhere genuinely off the map, Meru is the one.

Indicative schedule — day by day
Planned rhythm for your trip — your guide may adjust on the day for conditions, light and wildlife.
Day 1: Nairobi → Meru National Park
Morning drive north-east, skirting the Mount Kenya foothills, arriving at Meru for a late lunch. Afternoon game drive along the rivers and doum-palm groves — elephant at the water, reticulated giraffe, and the open plains game. Dinner and overnight at a riverside lodge or tented camp.
Day 2: Meru — rivers & rhino
A full day exploring the park. Morning game drive to the rhino sanctuary — one of Kenya's best-protected populations of both black and white rhino. The rivers draw everything here: elephant herds, buffalo, waterbuck, and lion resting in the shade. A picnic lunch by the water, then an afternoon drive as the light softens. Overnight at camp.
Day 3: Meru — Adamson's country
Deeper into the park today, toward the country made famous by Joy and George Adamson and Elsa the lioness. Big-cat tracking, birdlife along the Tana tributaries, and the sheer emptiness that makes Meru special. Optional visit to Elsa's grave. Dinner and overnight at camp.
Day 4: Meru → Nairobi
A final morning game drive, breakfast, then the drive back to Nairobi — or on to Ol Pejeta, Samburu or Mount Kenya if you're extending. We arrange the onward connection.

Visa & entry
- Most visitors need a Kenya eVisa before travel — apply at evisa.go.ke and check current fees and rules.
- Passport usually needs 6+ months' validity and blank pages — verify with your airline and immigration.
- Keep a printed copy of this itinerary and your eVisa for border control.
Health
- Yellow fever certificate may be required depending on where you are travelling from — check Kenya's latest entry rules.
- Malaria prevention is commonly recommended for safari areas — ask your doctor well before you fly.
- Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is strongly recommended.
- Bring personal medication in original packaging.
Weather & clothing
- Safari mornings and evenings are often cooler than midday — layers work better than one heavy coat.
- Neutral colours (khaki, olive, beige) are standard for game drives.
- Rain can appear in any season — a light waterproof layer is worth packing.
- We send a short weather note for your dates once your trip is confirmed.
Packing list
- Comfortable closed shoes for walking + sandals for camp or lodge
- Sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses
- Binoculars if you have a pair (optional — ask us if you'd like a recommendation)
- Power bank + travel adaptor (Kenya commonly uses Type G plugs, 240V)

- Some cash in USD (clean, newer bills) or KES for tips and small purchases
- Insect repellent

- Cards work in Nairobi and at many properties; cash is still useful for tips and markets.
